I am sharing images of Bakong in Siem Reap, taken in May 2017. On this occasion, I stopped there on the way to Tonle Sap Lake.
After arriving, I remembered that I had visited this site once before, in the mid-1990s. At that time, I wanted to go to Banteay Srei and tried to negotiate with a motorcycle taxi driver. However, he kept saying, “Soldier, many many,” and insisted that he did not want to go there. Instead, he brought me to this ruin.
Back then, I did not remember the name of the site, but when I saw it again, the shape of its towering central structure matched my memory. I found myself thinking, “So this was the place I visited back then.”
I seem to have spent most of this post talking about a personal memory rather than the ruin itself, but I hope you will forgive me for that.
