I am sharing images of Engakuji Temple in Kamakura, Japan. The temple is located near Kita-Kamakura Station on the JR Yokosuka Line.
I visited Engakuji to take part in one of its zazen meditation sessions. Before attending, I imagined that, as often shown on television, participants would be struck on the back with a stick if their posture was poor. However, perhaps because the session was intended for beginners, it was not nearly that strict.
I do not know whether these zazen sessions are still being held today, but anyone who is interested may want to check the temple’s official website.
Because I visited for that reason, I knew almost nothing about the temple itself. However, I was deeply impressed by the principal image enshrined in the temple’s Buddha Hall. It was far more beautiful than I had imagined.
