I am sharing images of Dusky Leaf Monkeys that I saw in Prachuap Khiri Khan, Thailand, in July 2010.

I do not remember the exact location, but it was at the foot of Khao Lom Muak, a small hill inside a military base. I have included a map at the end of this post, but I do not know whether the monkeys can still be seen there today.

On that day, I was exploring the outskirts of Prachuap Khiri Khan in a tuk-tuk arranged by my hotel. Along the way, I noticed a group of people gathered at the base of a hill inside the military base. When I asked the driver what was attracting the crowd, he told me that there were monkeys there.

I was not interested, because I had already seen many monkeys at Wat Khao Chong Krachok. However, the driver told me that I should go and take a look anyway. After I got out and joined the crowd, I noticed an unusual-looking monkey in a tree holding a small yellow creature.

A nearby information sign explained that they were a parent and baby Dusky Leaf Monkey. However, when I first saw them, I genuinely thought that the yellow creature was an alien.

The other places I visited that day were not especially memorable, but seeing such an unusual animal made it a lucky day for me. I am grateful for the driver’s thoughtfulness.
